Have you suffered from irregular cycles, acne and abdominal weight gain and are approaching perimenopause or menopause? The research on polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is often laser focused on the impact it has on fertility and miscarriage risk and often fails to emphasize how this complicated hormonal condition affects women over 40. Women who are in their 40s and 50s may have never been diagnosed accurately with PCOS, but have in their history signs of this condition such as irregular cycles, central weight gain or acne.
In this episode I review how to get a “past-diagnosis” of PCOS, and why we need to talk to women about their cycle history in their menopausal years. I share how PCOS impacts a woman’s cardiovascular risk and diabetes risk as she ages and how women can advocate for better health support for their metabolism as they age.
